YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: A person can not live any closer to the undeniably iconic and internationally renown Hollywood Sign than the fixer-upper residence Australian actor Julian McMahon just put on the market at $2,299,000.
Six-foot-two Mister MacMahon, best known as Dr. Doom in a couple of the “Fantastic Four” movies and for his booty-baring role as a hyper-vain plastic surgeon on “Nip/Tuck,” acquired the property in May 1997 for $712,000, according to property records, while current marketing materials say the two-story, wood-sided contemporary was originally built in the mid-1960s with three bedrooms and four bathrooms in 3,419 square feet.
Mister McMahon’s decision to sell his quirky aerie high above Beachwood Canyon and the Hollywood Reservoir after close to two decades in residence may or may not have something to do with his third and recent marriage to Kelly Paniagua, his children’s book-writing gal pal of about a dozen years. (In the mid 1990s the 2003 Golden Globe nominee was briefly espoused to pop star Kylie Minogue’s less famous actress-singer sister, Dannii Minogue, and in the late 1990s and early 2000s he was legally hitched to actress Brooke Burns, with whom he has a child. But we digress…)
Digital marketing materials don’t include any interior images of the house and describe the property as an “incredible opportunity to remodel or build new in a highly desired location in the East Hollywood Hills,” which this property gossip — who doesn’t know a hair brush from a brush with the law, of course — interprets as a not-so-subtle suggestion the existing house needs — at the very least — significant updating.
We really can’t say with any certainty whether he’s altered or upgraded the residence since, but a YouTube video we turned up from around the time of Mister McMahon’s stint on the long ago canceled crime-drama “Profiler” (1996-2000) shows the house then had a double-height entry with floating staircase, a circular great room with a (rather tacky) mirrored ceiling and an eat-in kitchen with downright kooky purple ceramic tile countertops. The video shows Mister McMahon then furnished the house with an idiosyncratic assortment of furnishings that included an antique pool table, a dining room table the doubles as a gaming table and a booze bar hidden inside a floor globe that was originally part of the day-core at William Randolph Heart’s eponymous castle in San Simeon, Calif.
The lower level opens to a roomy flagstone terrace, swimming pool, spa and detached cabana with bathroom, sauna and a “tuck shop” style bar. The hillside below the swimming pool has been terraced and landscaped with fruit trees, and the upper floor decks offer not just unusually up-close views of the Hollywood sign but also wrap around views that encompass the Griffith Observatory, the knot of towers that form the downtown skyline and, beyond the shimmering sliver of the Hollywood Reservoir, the Century City skyline and — on an especially clear day — the Pacific Ocean.
