Music Producer Erick Morillo Buys Hollywood Hills Hang Glider House
One of Los Angeles’ most recognizable houses has been sold, we first learned from Goldie Nugget, for $7.6 million to Miami Beach-based remix master and house-music producer Erick Morillo. Originally designed and built in 1974 by maverick modern architect Harry Gesner for lumber industry executive Mike Hyne, the recently and completely rehabbed residence is prominently perched like a hang glider ready to take flight on a gated promontory about as high in the Hollywood Hills as one can get. Knee buckling, 270-plus degree views encompass a bevvy of quintessential L.A. landmarks: the Hollywood sign, the Hollywood reservoir, Griffith Observatory, the Downtown skyline and, far below, the Hollywood Bowl.
The seller, pioneering radio personality and music producer Barry “Reazar” Richards and wife, Debra, purchased the gated, .82-acre property in 2010 for $2 million, and engaged the services of high-end architect Dean Larkin to expand and overhaul the house. (Mister Larkin, FYI, is the same fellow who did over the uber-lavish Liongate estate in Bel Air that — so the scuttlebutt goes — Steve Wynn is buying for about $50 million.) The two-story contemporary now spans more than 3,700 square feet, with four bedrooms, four full and two half bathrooms and — the lazy and infirm might be pleased to know — an elevator. Open-plan main living spaces (living, dining, kitchen and den) are located on the second floor under a vaulted, exposed-wood ceiling. Solid walls of windows and sliding glass doors open to a glass-railed terrace that cantilevers over the back yard and, from the inside of the house, visually hovers directly and dramatically over the 101 Freeway.
The glassed-in lower-level master suite has two sitting areas, built-in wardrobes and an exhibitionist’s dream bathroom with a free-standing soaking tub set in to the triangular point of two massive sheets of glass. Glass sliders in the lower-level rooms open to a roomy, wrap-around yard with a plaza-sized terrace, built-in fire pit and boomerang-shaped infinity pool with integrated tanning shelf and spa.
