City Council Adopts Interim Safety Plan for Trousdale Directs Staff to Allow Heavy Hauling with Mult

Beverly Hills, CA – The Beverly Hills City Council has directed staff at the June 17 Study Session to begin opening up the Trousdale area to heaving hauling with a series of interim measures that would enable safe transit of large construction vehicles. Large construction vehicles are defined as weighing more than 26,000 pounds and/or having three or more axles. The City will implement these measures over the next few weeks.

The new interim measures will require construction managers and general contractors to submit a plan for the safe operation of construction vehicles up to a maximum of 50,400 pounds, which would include the following elements:

  •  Limit of on-street parking for construction vehicles (plan for off-street parking)

  •  City-designated haul routes for large construction-related vehicles

  •  Secondary brake devices on all large construction-related trucks

  •  Verification of annual inspections of large commercial vehicle by City of Beverly Hills

  •  Maximum 15 mph truck speed limit

  •  Large vehicle construction-related trips limited to weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 3:15 p.m.

  •  24-hour notice required for large truck deliveries greater than 26,000 gross vehicle weight. In addition, the City will provide additional security in the area, post additional signs and offer educational materials for truck drivers. Construction managers and general contractors will be held responsible for following the new rules and any violations will result in a shutdown of the construction site. The goal of the City council is to have zero serious accidents going forward.

Planning will continue for permanent and long term solutions and may include City certification of trucks, monitors or escorts for trucks traveling downhill with heavy loads and authorization of certain companies for heavy hauls services.

In addition, the ongoing problems of speeding of all vehicles and street parking will be addressed in later phases of the Trousdale traffic safety plan.

Following the latest tragic accident on Loma Vista Drive, the City of Beverly Hills immediately suspended heavy vehicle delivery and pick up in the Trousdale area until additional safety measures could be established. To enforce the suspension, traffic control officers and signage are deployed at all four Trousdale area entrances. Overall enforcement efforts have been increased to ensure that speeding laws are followed.
